Basketball League

Basketball League

Founded in 1997, it is a professional basketball league in South Korea.

The league consists of 10 teams, each playing a total of 54 games (27 home and 27 away games) in the regular season.
The playoffs usually begin a week after the regular season ends.
Only the top six teams in the regular season rankings will advance to the postseason playoffs.
Qualification for the quarterfinals or semifinals of the playoffs is determined by the regular season ranking. Teams from 3rd to 6th place advance to the quarterfinals, while teams from 1st and 2nd place advance to the semifinals automatically.
The quarterfinals will be played in the best-of-three games. The two teams that win the quarterfinals advance to the semifinals.
The semi-finals will be played in the best-of-five series. The two semi-final winners compete for the KBL Championship title in the final.
The final round will be played in a best-of-seven series.
Under the FIBA Act, domestic players defined as Korean nationals are recruited through the rookie draft every year. The draft has been in force since 1998. In 2009, a national draft was introduced to allow one of the players or parents who acquired Korean nationality to recruit a Korean player. Players recruited through the national draft are not considered imported players.
Players from the Korea Basketball Federation are eligible to apply to fulfill their military service obligations as members of the Armed Forces Athletic Corps. Along with military service, they are allowed to train as professional athletes and play on the Sangmu basketball team. Successful applicants will officially enlist in May or June and be discharged in January 18 months later, returning to the team roster for the final round of the regular season.
